Sara Tucholsky’s Inspiring Story You’d think it’s the kind of stuff that movies are made of. It was April of 2008 and Western Oregon and Central Washington’s softball teams were battling it out for the conference championship. With a championship at stake, one could easily imagine how important the game was since every game counts in a championship series. But what most people didn’t know then was how much more special the game would become for everyone of them. At the second inning, Western Oregon’s Sara Tucholsky was at bat, with two of her teammates occupying each of the 1st and 2nd bases. With the second pitch, Sara hit the ball. But it went farther than expected. After all, Sara admits that she’s more of a line driver than a power hitter. The ball flew out of the field. Sara made the first ever home run in her career. Nobody was more excited to be in that position than Sara. But in her excitement, she missed the 1st base. So she quickly turned back. But then, something wrong happened. It turned out that Sara tore her ACL, a ligament found on the knee. She fell to the ground, unable to get herself back up on her feet. She crawled her way back to the first base. She was in extreme pain. Since it was apparent that she couldn’t complete the run anymore, West Oregon’s head coach Pam Knox turned to an umpire. She asked what the ruling was if she let another player substitute Sara to complete the run. The coach replied that that would be a two run single. It meant that Sara’s homerun wouldn’t count. Would they let Sara keep her homerun or void it? West Oregon was in a dilemma. A dilemma solved by Central Washington. Mallory Holtman of Central Washington asked an umpire whether her teammates could pick Sara up to let the injured player complete her homerun. The umpire was baffled. And so was Sara’s teammates. But eventually, the umpire said yes. It was then that Washington’s Liz Wallace offered to help Sara up, saying she deserved the homerun. So with Mallory, they carried the injured player around the bases, letting her feet touch each base that they passed. With her feet touching the home plate, she made her first and last career homerun. Less than a hundred people saw the game that day. But what they didn’t know that every second of that event was recorded by Sue Wallin. From there, many more people were able to witness the event through major sports channels and the internet. The injury ended Sara’s softball career. However, it was a career that ended well. She made her first and only homerun in her career. And she even let her opponents help her do that. But what’s more was that her two opponents helped her, even if it cost Central Washington the game, 4-2.n

Outplacement sounds like such an ugly word. The very connotation of the word brings to mind “outcast” or other unpleasant ideas. When placed in the context of the job market, it reminds us that someone’s position with a company has been found redundant. Redundancy, of course, draws to mind the word “unnecessary,” and you can take it from there. If you have been affected by the recent recession, then you have probably heard this word much more than you care to, and the time has possibly come for a career transition. Here are five ways the recession will impact outplacement in 2010:

Resume writing: Outplacement services often help redundant employees back on their feet by assisting in the production of a quality resume through either resume writing services, or education on what makes one sparkle and attract attention from other relevant potential employers. With more and more jobseekers out there on the market, resume writing will naturally be affected by the recession over the course of the New Year.

Career guidance and evaluation: Another area where outplacement services help jobseekers with career transition is through guidance and evaluation of their skills and qualifications. If you have been negatively impacted by the recession, then you don’t need to give up. You have skills that someone will find of value. You simply need to evaluate where those skills are currently more in demand, and then go after those jobs.

Interview preparation: Perhaps the most important area where outplacement services can help you find a new situation is in the way they prepare you for job interviews. If you have been working for a long time or if you are new to the game, then your skills are probably not all they could be, whether through rust or inexperience. Outplacement services can lead you to a better understanding of what employers are looking for when they finally meet you.

Networking: Networking is a skill in itself. Now that we have social networks, more and more people understand the true meaning behind this most valuable concept. Outplacement services can help you to establish quality relationships with people who can positively influence your career in the very near future.

Targeting the job market: Last but not least, the recession will impact outplacement in 2010 by teaching candidates how to better target the job market. If you know the jobs that best provide you the opportunity to exercise skill and passion, then you will know where to spend your time applying. Furthermore, if you know who you should approach at a potential employer, you can focus on putting your best foot forward and showing that individual that you are not only qualified to work for him or her, you are also savvy enough to knock on the right doors at the right time.

The recession will continue to impact the need for quality outplacement services in the weeks and months ahead. Will you be ready to take advantage of all the services they have to offer? On the one hand, you never want to be without a job; but on the other, if it prepares you for a smooth career transition and a better tomorrow, then you will be better off at the end of 2010 than you ever were at the beginning.

Looking at the present scenario, nursing is promising as one of the most popular professions in the Health care industry and so the demand for qualified registered nurses is even increasing further. These days registered nursing is considered as well-recognized and rewarding occupation which involves a high level of training. The best advantage of becoming a registered nurse is that you can choose from a variety of specializations in the field of nursing.

Generally we can consider registered nurse as teacher. They are professionals who are responsible for executing the practice of nursing by applying various nursing process in conjunction with other health care professionals. They are primarily involved in educating patients and their families on different ways through which illness or injury can be managed. Besides this, their work responsibilities also involve guiding patients about their diet and exercise programs, and various medication and physical therapies.

Career Prospect

The major highlight of choosing this career is that once you become a registered nurse you actually become eligible for holding different nursing supervisor positions. These positions are designed to oversee the schedules and duties of other nurses. Nursing supervisors generally have less patient contact and their prime role is to be accountable for the training and performance of all of the nurses whom they are supervising. In addition, this career even offers you to make a mark in consulting which can be a yet another feasible and interesting career option. Being a nursing consultant, you can advise on different issues like injuries, treatments and medical costs.

Apart from this, after becoming a registered nurse the life as health coordinators can be another feasible option. In many countries, registered nurses are hired to coordinate the health programs for individuals for a government agency, company or non-profit group. Another career prospect that this profession can offer you is in the education field. After becoming a registered nurse, if you are confident and carry the skills to share your knowledge with others then health educator is ideal for you. Being as a health educator, you may work for government agencies, school systems, non-profits, and other organizations seeking to educate others on either specific heath topics or general knowledge.

Obtaining the degree

In order to obtain a degree or attain a license as a registered nurse you should qualify the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The main aim of this examination is to test your ability and knowledge generally required for the practice of nursing at the entry level in the US states. In addition to this, you can also apply for various registered nursing programs offered by various registered nursing schools. Moreover, today there are even online registered nursing schools that provide an alternative that is both more accessible and economical.

In all the job searches people do when looking to either change career’s or simply start a new one… The role of ‘Male Nurse’ is probably one career that males would either not think of, or simply avoid like the plague, Why? Because the majority of the time these guys who would never venture into this area are lead by the misconception that male nurses are either gay or at least femine. All i can say to this, being a male nurse myself, is that you can not be further away from the truth than if you were mining for silver on one of Saturns moon’s.

As a male nurse I am always approached by visitors to the hospital with the greatest respect and I notice more and more that I am looked upon with a little bit of awe. Not wanted or intending to seem a little big headed here but I just need to explain that the role of the male nurse is not ‘out there’ in the minds of people reading lists of job opportunities. I personally think that we are a select few and in that vein are a little mysterious. Yes.. I think that more or less sums it up in a nutshell.

I enjoy my work because I do my daily tasks alongside my female workers as an equal. As a male nurse I can imput a little more because of the fact that I am one of a few. Certain situations can call for a male presence just the same as there are situations calling for a female presence. Interestingly enough, I am the only male nurse on the ward i work on with the exception of a male staff nurse. So… If the female nurse has enjoyed the role all of these years being looked upon as, shall we say, a sexy female. How about us male nurses being afforded the same huh? I mean.. we look good in our tunics, we do the same job!.

Strange really when you think of it… You never get to see or hear much information on ‘The Male Nurse’, every other job discription is out there….Truck Driver, Builder, Store manager, Construction Guy’s – Go on admit it.. I’m right yeah? So where is the Male Nurse? If we had more information made wider to the public, then maybe we’d have more guy’s doing this valuable and rewarding work. It’s great fella’s, really. If you’ve read this and by some chance you were wanting to change career’s…. Then make the change and at least look into it… You’ll never look back.

A residence health care field can also be special for a nursing career; these nurses offer care to patients in their own home.

For those who are recovering from out patient surgical treatment, childbirth and accident victims. Home health care nurses also provide hospital care for the terminally ill.

There is nearly a nursing career for every feature of the medical field. A nurse that manages intravenous medication and fluids is called a combination nurse. They also administer blood transfusions.

A nurse that works in the operating room has a special title. It is called a perianesthesia, and the duties comprise all pre and postoperative care. In the operation room, these are the nurses that hand the appliance to the surgeon.

A nurse in the perianesthesia field is also is licensed to work in a Plastic surgeons place of work.

A nursing career in the radiology ground trains the nurse to make available tests that include ultrasounds, x-rays, diagnostic radiation procedures, and MRI’s.

There are several choices when attending nursing school and each field has its own specialty training, it can be a hard to know what type of nursing career to decide and sometimes it is essential to use a rotation method to make the decision.

A hospital will let a student nurse to work in different wards in order to come to a decision which nursing career to choose. There are some nurse careers that do not need any patient contact. Even though, they do not work with patients unswervingly, they are still required to have an authorization. For those patients that have been offended, a case manager can help out with all of the patient needs.

A forensic nursing career is probably the most attractive aspect to a nursing career. Forensic nursing is an arrangement of nursing and investigating crime. A forensic nurse works with law enforcement companies to resolve crimes involving child abuse, accidental death, or sexual attack cases in which the victim has died.

A nursing staff is managed by nurse supervisors, these nurses also establish and maintain timetable, bring inventory and work within the financial statement that established for that department.

Almost health care amenities and hospitals have to preserve a certain level of cleanliness. A place that is not kept or is not clean will be shut down.

The typical working conditions for nurses are sometimes very hard. There are long hours, working holidays, weekends and nighttimes too. Occasionally a nurse can work for more than a week without a day off. Their pay scale is not very high, and sometimes it is not very rewarding. But their training has qualified them that no matter how bad of a day they are having, the patient is having a not as good as one. After all, they are the ones that are ill or hurt. This more often than not puts things into point of view and they can get on with their day.

A nursing career is a profession, and is not for everybody. Men can look a nursing career, even if ninety five percent of the nursing group of people is women.

People put a lot of thought into changing careers. After all, it is one of the more important decisions one can make. We have to consider our families, our living and financial situations, our competitive advantage in the new field, etc. Making a career change typically means starting with a blank canvas; while you have the freedom to Interior Paintin that canvas any which way you wish, you have to invest time, energy, make sacrifices and prove yourself as a credible professional in your new field. You have to be competitive, and motivated, and sustain the drive that is necessary to be successful. After you convince yourself that changing careers is the right thing to do, you will have to convince your potential employers to give you the job you are seeking.

To do so, you have to do your research. Demonstrate to your employer that you have an extensive knowledge of the industry, even if you don’t have the accompanying experience. Before you begin your new career, make sure that you understand what professional paths are available for you, and determine what your ultimate goal is. This will help you form the career objective for your resume. Additional, make sure to do your research on the company you are interested in, as well as their competition (if you are interested in non-profit organizations, make sure to brush up on other organizations with similar missions); if invited for an interview, you will want to appear very knowledgeable not only about their company, but about the industry as a whole. You will have to convince your potential employer that you the best person for the job, better than the candidates with experience – to do that, you have to showcase not only your enthusiasm for the opportunity, but your eagerness to learn and your knowledge about the field.

Transferable skills, those skills that can be utilized in numerous fields, are also a key to a successful career change. Consider your qualifications to date. What experience have you acquired that can be transferred across industries? Transferable skills include verbal and written communication, people management, customer relations, organization and project management, development of new processes, generation of new ideas or concepts, etc. Such skills can be adapted to all organizations, and you should utilize them to showcase your qualifications for the job you are seeking. For example, if you would like to ditch the 9-to-5 desk job for a hectic, unpredictable life of a high school teacher, let your potential employer know that your previous experience in leading by motivation makes you a perfect candidate for the job (even if that marketing project you managed has nothing to do with teaching English composition). Making a list of all your professional experiences and the qualifications needed for the job you are seeking will help you in determining which skills are transferable to your new career. Once you define your transferable skills, use a functional resume to assure most (if not all) of the qualifications needed for the new job are met in your resume.

In addition to your resume, use your cover letter or email to let your potential employer know why you are changing careers, and that your new interest is not a passing one. Make sure that your resume reflects your newfound interest in a genuine and professional manner, and you are sure to have a successful career change.

By Shonda Hercules, PhD Learner, M.A.

I remember it well; I was five years old, and a kindergartner at Sallie Humble Elementary School. My teacher stood tall before our class, and asked that one question that was to shape our existence for learning for the rest of our lives, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” she asked. Each kid had a different answer, and that year, my answer was a doctor. Then, the year after that, it was a bus driver (go figure). Of course, by the time I was in the 6th grade, it was a politician. Then somewhere before entering college, I was back at a doctor—after entertaining the possibilities of lawyer, a mad scientist, and just rich so that I didn’t have to do anything!

Now, it could be that I just have happened to be a child that had no clue what she wanted to do at that very young age. But to think about it, how many children we know at age 5, age 10, or even at age 18 that specifically know without a doubt what it is that they want to do for the rest of their lives? To make it even more interesting, how many of us as adults truly know that what we are doing right now is what we want to continue to do, or if it what we thought we wanted to do as a career is not at all what we thought it was going to be?

The truth is that on average, a College student will change their major at least four times before they graduate, while the career adult will switch careers at least three times in their life. So back to my original question for this article, “Now that you are all grown up, what do you really want to be, and more importantly, do you know how to get there?”

Very few people have trouble with this question, as they are able to set their sights on their goal, go for it, and love it. But what about those of us who still feel as if we haven’t found that answer, or we have found our new path, but aren’t quite sure of how to get there? Well, here are a few suggestions that could help you:

(1) Spend some quiet time with yourself and with your thoughts. If you are a spiritual person, then pray that these answers will be revealed. While taking this quiet time, ask yourself the following questions: (a) If money were not an object, what would I be doing right now that truly makes me happy? (b) How much money will it take for me to live comfortably or live in my desired lifestyle? (c) What are my values in life and what could I possibly do for a career that would align with those values? After you have taken some time to reflect on these questions, be sure to write down the answers that you come up with.

(2) From the responses that you gathered from the activity in question 1, review your potential list of career choices. If you are unfamiliar of what is needed to begin in this career, where the jobs are located, salary requirements, etc., then take some time to do some research. Find out as much as you can about these positions and even try to contact some individuals currently doing the work in which you are interested.

(3) After you have conducted your research, the next step is something that I advise my clients to be very truthful with themselves on. The next step is to take an inventory of the skills that they currently possess and measure those against the skills that are required for their desired positions. In other words, perform a gap analysis of where you are currently and what is needed to help you take that extra step forward.

(4) After identifying your gaps, you now have identified the milestones that you need to work towards to reach your ultimate goal. Depending on exactly what your gaps are, you may have to do some additional research such as looking at colleges, seminars, workshops, etc. to better identify where you can go to obtain the skills needed to propel you forward.

As a Life and Career Coach, I will tell you that obtaining your desired career is much more than a four-step process, but these first four steps will help you to get started on the correct path, and are usually the steps that work through with my clients to help identify their true desires. There are times when I recommend that in addition to my clients identifying their own strengths and weaknesses, that they have a 360 completed to help identify the strengths and weaknesses that others perceive them having. There are also personality assessments such as Myers Briggs, and career interest inventories such as the Strong Interest Inventory that can be given to help provide more clarity in identifying the potential career paths that exist for you.

Regardless, when it comes to deciding what you want to do when you grow up, as we become adults, the most important thing is to identify what it is that we value—family, money, security, peace of mind, et

When you are a working professional, business cards become a very important tool to help you establish contacts and network with other business professionals on your way to a successful career. Handing out business cards will help you to let people know exactly who you are and how they will be able to reach you when they have any questions, comments, or concerns about your products or services. You will be able to give anyone direct access to you on a professional level, which will be important as your career develops. This is why you will want to make sure that you have business cards on hand to help you make the lasting impression you need.

More than just business cards, however, you will need to consider what type of printing services you are going to have at your disposal. In order to successfully market yourself and your business, you will need to have a professional printer who will be able to handle all of your typical printing needs, especially when you have tight deadlines. Knowing that you can find a printer who will handle overnight printing can be important if you want to be successful in today’s fast paced business world. Keep in mind that if you need overnight printing you will need to find a printer who has high quality digital printing technology.

Once you’ve established a good working relationship with a printer who is able to handle digital overnight printing, you will be able to turn to them for all of your rush printing needs. One of the best things about digital printing is the fact that you have the flexibility to order whatever quantities of printed materials you need. For example, if you run out of business cards and you immediately need a small quantity, you will be able to get them through overnight printing. The same can hold true for flyers, pamphlets, and typical order forms. Unlike offset printing which requires a week or more to print and is not cost justified unless you are printing large quantities, digital printing allows you to print what you need, when you need it.

The better that you are able to have all of the printed materials which you need, the more successful you will be with your business. That is going to prove to be valuable for when you need to meet tight deadlines. Having the ability to get overnight printing services can be a career saver. The fact that digital printing is being used as well will ensure that the products which you receive in the end are of the highest visual quality.

While you may start your relationship with an overnight printing company with just a business card order, you will be able to turn to this same printer for all of your further rush printing needs. This will help you to always be able to meet the demands of your boss and your clients, helping you to build better business relationships and utilize your skills to a higher degree. Finding a reliable printing company that can deliver rush business cards is a great asset to have during your career.

Getting laid off can often provide you the perfect opportunity to make those career changes about which you’ve always dreamed, whether it’s working for a large corporation or setting up shop on your own. In fact, once the initial shock of losing your job passes, you might just find getting laid off is the catalyst you’ve needed all along to break free from “JobJail” by reconsidering what it is you want out of your career (and maybe even your life) and by establishing priorities and a game plan for what comes next.
r
rJobJail can affect you in good economic times and bad, no matter what position you occupy in a company, whether you are self employed, or even if you’re the owner. When you’re in JobJail, often times your current position doesn’t generate sufficient income, you fear changing jobs out of loyalty, and/or you feel stagnated because there’s no clear career path for advancement or room for professional development. Being in JobJail means that you feel trapped, drained, unfulfilled, unchallenged, or challenged to stay challenged at work. Your job suffers, you suffer, and so do your co-workers, employees, employer, and even your family and home life. You get complacent.
r
rGetting laid off can change all of that. After all, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Your “new” job (because no one is ever really out of a job; not even those who are laid off) is to find your next RIGHT job and finally break free from the cycle of being trapped in one unfulfilling position after another.
r
rHere are 10 simple exercises you can engage in right away to turn being laid off into the springboard you need to start breaking free:
r
r1.Declare to yourself and to the world that you are going to make choices based on what you want to achieve from your career, not based on what you perceive others want you to achieve.
r
r2. Answer, “When am I the most productive when working at my job?”
r
r3. Answer, “When am I the most stressed when working at my job?”
r
r4. Identify personal or professional activities that energize and interest you.
r
r5. Identify personal or professional activities that leave you feeling drained.
r
r6. Enlist the help of current and former colleagues, friends, clients, and business contacts you know you can count on for honest feedback and support by asking them what you do really well and what they consider your natural strengths to be.
r
r7. Look at your previous jobs and compare those activities with your answers to numbers 2 through 6 above. Where is there congruence? Where are there gaps or inconsistencies?
r
r8. Look at the big picture of what you want out of life and your career, and then narrow your focus to determine how you might apply this “big picture” thinking in pursuit of a job or business venture.
r
r9. Pursue only those activities that align with who you are, your strengths, and your unique abilities.
r
r10. Be honest with yourself. Stop being someone or something you are not and take ownership for your choices and the results (both good and bad).

Taking the right steps immediately to find the career change or job options open to you may propel you into a completely different and more fulfilling lifestyle.

You could find yourself propelled into a completely different and more fulfilling lifestyle if you take the right steps now to search for your ideal career change options.

Once you have dealt with the intial shock of redundancy, it can be an exciting time to reassess and re-evaluate what is important when considering your future options.

Think of it from the positive slant and remember that although you may be feeling overwhelmed it is your job position, not you that has been made redundant! That may seem like semantics, but it is an important distinction to make. People often report an initial feeling of worthlessness and a general feeling of not being wanted. It is not at all unusual or unnatural to feel this way, but your employer has in fact found it necessary to cut certain positions in order to make the company more cost effective.

Do not for one minute consider this as a slight on your ability to perform your job. In fact, such thoughts can be mentally and emotionally destructive and can hinder your chances of moving ahead, so do not allow them to control your actions. Nor should you waste time and energy feeling aggrieved at your former employer. Dont waste your time bound up in what has happened. Focus your energies now on what is right for you, your family and what the future has to hold. After all, your future is something you can influence, your past is not.

The point is, whilst your job/position may be redundant, you most certainly are NOT! There are many stories from people in all walks of life who have found that a career change has been the start of exciting new directions! Although you may be worried about the future and will probably be feeling a little down and depressed, now is not the time to let those emotions get the better of you. Remaining positive will be an important factor in your ability to take control of the situation and move forward.

Don’t allow that ‘little voice in your head’ to give you a negative mindset.
